Students honored by DAR
Northwestern Lehigh High School student Devon Devers was among students honored March 23, by the Liberty Bell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution during its annual Good Citizen Award ceremony.
The chapter paid tribute to the students who were selected as being the most qualified to be their school's good citizen based on DAR's four criteria of dependability, leadership, service and patriotism.
Eight high schools in Lehigh County participated.
Winners then moved to the next phase of the contest, consisiting of a 70-point personal section and a 30-point essay.
Three non-DAR judges, working independently, evaluated each student.
The student who accumulated the greatest number of total points from all three judges then advanced to the state level of competition.
DAR Chapter Award Chairman Betsy Burnhauser and Co-chair Debra Joseph presented a pin, wallet card, certificate and book, titled "1776," by author David McCullough, to each winner.
Chairman Hope Thorn announced the winners of the Junior ROTC awards.
They included Cadet Lt. Liz Ramirez, Dieruff; and Cadet Petty Officer 3rd Class Ibrahim Abakkar.
Joseph Phillips, of Pleasant Valley High School, was awarded the Silver DAR Outstanding U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Medal.
In addition to Devers, hig school winners honored by the DAR were: Catasauqua, Emily Ledesma; Dieruff, Sianilee Vasquez; Emmaus, Alexa Iannace; Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, Nalleyn Nunez; Salisbury, Kaitlyn Toman; Southern Lehigh, Brycen Holland; and Whitehall, Emily Brand.
