Lewis K. Hosfeld
Lewis Kohler Hosfeld, 86, of Columbia, died May 5, 2015, at Lancashire Hall. Born in Macungie, he was the son of the late M. Elmer and Annie E. (Kohler) Hosfeld. He was the husband of the late M. Jeanette (Banzhoff) Hosfeld and Edna A. (McComsey) Hosfeld.
He graduated from Emmaus High School in 1946 and earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Lehigh University in 1950. He worked for 38 years as a scientist beginning his career with Penn-Dixie Cement Company in Nazareth and Butler. In 1955, he moved to Lancaster to work for Armstrong Cork Company, retiring in 1988. At the time of his retirement he had nine patents. His field of expertise at Armstrong was in the process of adhering paint to ceiling tile.
He held memberships in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, American Paint Society, Intersociety Color Council and the Technical Association of the Pulp & Paper Institute.
He was also a man of music. He played flute and piccolo in school bands and orchestras throughout high school and college. He studied with Bertold Wavrek, first flutist of the Allentown Band. He performed with the Allentown Band, the Lehigh Valley Symphony, and other groups in Lehigh County, including the Macungie Band. After moving to Lancaster County, he joined the Rohrerstown Band and other area groups. He eventually spent several decades with the Bainbridge Band and the New Holland Band.
He was a lifetime member of the American Federation of Musicians and a long-time member of the Lancaster Musical Arts Society.
He had previously been a long-time member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Macungie and of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, Lancaster.
He was proud of his Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and could still speak the dialect.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
He is survived by a daughter, Corinne H. Smith, of Columbia; sister Jeanette Stansfield, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two nieces, six nephews; six grand-nieces and one grand-nephew. He was predeceased by a brother Richard.

A celebration of life service will be held at Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville, 11 a.m. May 13 Arrangements were made by the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., Mountville/ Columbia.
