Borough market to open May 26

The Northampton Farmers Market will open for a third season Tuesday, May 26, at its uptown location on Main Street.

The borough-sponsored outdoor market is located on grounds that years ago housed a retail cotton goods shop.

The property that was acquired more than two years ago with a grant from Monroe County casino gaming funds is also being developed as a community mini park. The grounds have been graded, utility lines placed on the site and a gazebo moved there.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko reported last Friday the farmers market continues to grow each year. There is expected to be eight to 10 vendors, mostly locally grown produce, from four or five vendors at the start.

Victor Rodite, borough community planner, is credited with bringing the farmers market to the borough.

The market operates Tuesdays, 3-7 p.m., through October.

Work will continue on the uptown park, with the farmers market facing Main Street.

There will be benches, Colonial-style lamp posts, shrubbery, fencing and landscaping.

The borough site is located between a church and a coffee shop on the south. The Roxy Theatre is located a few yards north of the market and mini park.
