EHS girls lax starts slow in loss to Trojans

It was a tale of two different games for the Emmaus girls lacrosse team and its rival Parkland.

In the first matchup, a 20-9 loss on April 7, the Green Hornets were right there neck-and-neck with the Trojans, just one goal down at halftime.

But last Thursday afternoon, Parkland raced out to an early 5-0 lead in the first five minutes before Emmaus could even get a shot on goal, and the early deficit was too much to overcome as the Green Hornets fell to the Trojans 12-5 at Troxell Middle School field.

"You never want to get down and then have to battle back, and that's what we found ourselves doing today," said head coach Nancy DeBellis. "You can't get in a hole against a good team like Parkland. You either have to play even right at the start of the game or get a jump on them."

The Trojans remained unbeaten in the league for the third straight year. Their last loss actually came at the hands of Emmaus in April of 2012.

Cathleen Gaffney, Ana Emrick, Sophie Castillo, Lex Rice, and Mackenzie Galli scored within the first five minutes of the game as the Trojans raced out to that 5-0 advantage.

Even after Destanee Watkins broke the scoreless streak for the Green Hornets with her first of three goals on the day, Parkland jumped right back with a goal each from Castillo and Gaffney. Watkins and Grace Sullivan added two more goals in the first half, but Emmaus's deficit was at 9-3 at halftime.

The Trojans dominated the draw controls, winning 13 of 18 and they also doubled up the Hornets in shots on goal 18-9, and that was a big reason for the lopsided score.

Maddie Dorn got on the board in the second half, but the one-two punch of Castillo and Gaffney did more damage of their own with three combined goals in the second half to take this one.

"They still have those powerhouse girls in there, and obviously they've all been working together for quite a while," noted DeBellis. "They know each other. They know where they are, and where they are supposed to be."

Sophomore goalie Cristina Carotenuto was credited with seven saves and played well in the second half, allowing only three goals.
