Carl F. Schmoyer III of Breinigsville was honored at the 118th annual conference of the Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution, recently held at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center, Fogelsville.

Schmoyer, who almost 12 years ago with his family initiated a massive Fourth of July fireworks display for Lehigh Valley residents in Breinigsville Park, was presented the Ellen Hardin Walworth Founders Medal for Patriotism award by Pennsylvania State Regent Roberta (Bobbi) McMullen.

In addition to the DAR presenting Schmoyer with the Founders Medal for Patriotism, he was presented a Pennsylvania House of Representative citation by former state Rep. Doug Reichley for state Rep. Gary Day (R-187th).

Schmoyer, whose family has conducted business in the Breinigsville area since 1879, was nominated for the Founders Medal award.

During the presentation, McMullen read an excerpt from one of the 10 letters of recommendation she received that nominated Schmoyer for the award.

According to the NSDAR, it was founded in 1890 by Mary Desha, Mary S. Lockwood, Ellen Walworth and Eugenia Washington.

The Founders Medal, established in 1995 and named after each of these founders, recognize those who have given unselfishly to their community, state or nation in the areas of patriotism, education, heroism or youth.

The Ellen Hardin Walworth Medal for Patriotism honors an adult who has displayed outstanding patriotism in the promotion of the American ideals of God, home and country through faithful and meritorious service to the community, state or nation.

The DAR, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America's future through better education for children.
