Salisbury tennis earns CL silver

Despite coming up short to Moravian Academy in last week's Colonial League tennis championship game 5-0 for the second time this season, Salisbury capped another successful season in conference play once again.

For the second straight year, the Falcons earned a position in the league championship game. And while the Falcons would've like to beat a team like Moravian, who has won 12 of the 15 Colonial League team titles (including four straight), there's something to be said about their current two-year run.

"It's frustrating because we keep losing to Moravian," head coach Rob Benson said. "But by the same token, there is a big gap between all of the other teams and us. And then there is a gap between us and Moravian."

Salisbury hadn't played for a league championship prior to 2014.

With two of his top singles players back and both doubles teams returning from last year, Benson had high hopes going into the season. So, finishing with silver medals around their necks wasn't anything that surprised the Salisbury head coach.

"I expected us to be here," Benson said. "I think a lot of the matches were closer. They might not have been three sets, but they were in it."

At No. 2 singles, Mason Groff took three games in each set against Moravian's Adam Kramer, but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-3. Groff previously beat Kramer earlier in the season.

Moravian's Zach Schaff downed John Yurconic at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1), and Abbhi Sckar defeated Daniel Bonge at the No. 3 position by a similar score (6-0, 6-1).

In doubles action, Moravian's duo of Ryan Brands and Daniel Elmi at No. 2 defeated Eric Young and Aaron King (6-3, 6-3). Jackson Dorogi and Oliver Scott took down Salisbury's No. 1 doubles team, Brendan Reichenbach and Jack Bonge, in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).

All of the Falcons may have lost in straight sets, but Benson believes their lastest meeting with the Lions was their most complete showing yet. Salisbury was Moravian's biggest threat at tarnishing their unbeaten league record on March 19, taking two of the five matches.

"I actually thought with a couple of breaks here or there we could've actually won that," Benson said. "Even though we lost 3-2 to them earlier in the year, I thought this was actually closer."

The Falcons defeated Saucon Valley, 3-2, in the semifinals round.

Yurconic and Groff beat their opponents in straight sets in singles action, while Reichenbach and Bonge edged out the Panthers' Adam Prager and Chris Thompson (6-3, 6-4) to advance the Falcons to Thursday's championship.

With both teams in the District 11 Class AA classification, a fourth meeting between Salisbury and Moravian may be on the horizon come the district team tournament.
