Howard O. George

Howard O. George Jr., 87, of Walnutport, died April 12, 2015, at Lehigh Valley Hospice-Inpatient Unit, Allentown. He was the husband of LaRue "Betty" (Vogel) George for 69 years.

Born in Cherryville, he was a son of the late Howard O. George Sr. and the late Grace I. (Heckman) George.

He was a private in the Army Air Corps in 1946 and 1947.

He was a police officer in the Northampton Police Department until he retired on March 1, 1992, after 25 years. He had been previously, for five years, with the Lehigh Township Police Department. He was, after his retirement, a part-time funeral assistant for Schisler Funeral Home, Northampton, for seven years.

He was a 66-year life member and a former finance officer for the American Legion Oplinger-Hower Post 899, Walnutport. He was a life member and a former assistant chief for Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Company, Cherryville, for more than seven years. He was a former Lehigh Township constable for five years. He was a former Le-Hampton F.O.P. Lodge 35 Northampton, treasurer for 14 years and a former past president and financial secretary of the former United Steel Workers of America Local 2538, Cherryville. He was a former member of the legislative committee for District 9, United Steel workers, Bethlehem, legislative committee.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons; Dwight F. and his wife Chun Ling of Dallas, Ga., and Keith H. of Frackville; three daughters; Brenda G. and her husband Claude Missmer of Walnutport, Donna L. Nonnemacher of Allentown, and Lynn M. and her husband John Farkas III of North Whitehall Township; two brothers, Roger George of Hackettstown, N.J. and Larry and his wife Betty George of Bethlehem; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters.
