George R. Strohl Jr.
George R. Strohl Jr., formerly of Harrisburg, died, of health issues due to an accident, April 2, 2015, at the Church of God Home, Carlisle. He was the husband of Carlotta (Scholl) Strohl for 49 years.
Born in Northampton, he was the son of the late George R. Strohl Sr. and Ethel Strohl.
He was a graduate of Gannon College, Erie. He earned a master's degree in counseling pshychology from the University of Scranton. and in hospital administration from Columbia University.
He was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, 5th Battalion, 27th Artillery Regimant, and was in Vietnam from October 1967 to August 1968. He was in four major campaigns and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service.
He was a hospital administrator at Scranton State General Hospital. He then became president and chief executive officer of Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg, for 20 years. Following the merger with Pinnacle Health System, he retired in 1999 as the vice president for system planning and business development. He was a hospital administrator surveyor for the American Osteopathic Association.
He was the chairman of the American Osteopathic Healthcare Association and a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Vietnam Veterans Center, Harrisburg; Rotary Club Colonial Park; Pennsylvania Osteopathic Hospital Association; Hospital Association of Pennsylvania; Hospital Council of Central Pennsylvania; Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association and World Mission of Central Pennsylvania. In 1992, he returned to Vietnam with Aid to Southeast Asia to donate hospital equipment.
He received the American Osteopathic Healthcare Association Award of Merit in 1991 and the College of Osteopathic Healthcare Executives, CEO Award of Excellence, 1997.
In addition to his mother and his wife, he is survived by a son, G. Richard "Rick" III and his wife Denise of Mechanicsburg; a daughter, Heather M. and her husband Jason Whipkey, of Hyde Park, Vt.; four grandsons, Ryan and Sean Strohl and Will and Jimmy Whipkey; two brothers, Terry and his wife Karla of Murrells Inlet, S.C. and Michael and his wife Debbi of Coplay; aunts; an uncle; nieces; and nephews.
