Borough will apply for open space grant

Northampton Borough Council has established a municipal park acquisition and development program.

Council was informed of the program at its April 2 meeting. The program seeks a Northampton County grant to further improve one of the borough's recreation sites. Borough community planner Victor Rodite was authorized to prepare an application to the county for an open space initiative grant.

"If we are successful in receiving the grant, we will use the funds to purchase property at Fourth and Pearl streets, which will be developed into a parking lot for the Fourth Street Playground," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said.

In conjunction with the grant application, Zarayko reported, "Work is progressing on obtaining an appraisal for the property that we want to purchase at Fourth and Pearl streets."

The site includes playground equipment for children, a ball field, facilities for picnics and limited parking.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Jr., building and land, recreation chairman, said the recreation center is sponsoring a bus trip June 13 to the Hollywood Casino. Further information is available at the Lerchenmiller Drive center.

The recreation center will also hold a golf tournament later this year. Donations have already reached $300.

Councilman Robert Coleman, administration and finance chairman, said CPower, in conjunction with the borough's emergency generator located at the wastewater treatment plant, provided the borough with a $607 check.
