Quota Club presents AED to police department

The Northampton Quota Club presented the borough's police department with an automatic electronic defibrillator (AED) March 23 during the group's dinner meeting, held at the Northampton Memorial Community Center.

An AED is used in cases where a person suffers a sudden heart attack.

Police Chief Ron Morey accepted the AED. Morey said the borough has two police vehicles on duty 24 hours a day, and the device will be available at all times to assist persons.

Quota Club members also heard a talk by blacksmith Chris Opresko, who gave an address on the Industrial Revolution and Bethlehem Steel's contribution to steel making.

Opresko said establishing the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. into a museum of national significance was made possible due to local efforts, along with the Smithsonian Institute.

Opresko said there will be a 40-foot by 100-foot site for a working blacksmith shop there. It is a small-scale version of Bethlehem Steel's once-operating blacksmith shop.

The many artifacts include the first steam hammer from Sheffield, England, according to Opresko.

A Northampton Area High School alumnus, Opresko said he addresses the topic of blacksmithing at fairs, schools and other events..

He noted at one time Bethlehem Steel was the largest steel-producing company in the world, with plants throughout the United States.

Opresko said Bethlehem Steel produced shells for the Armed Forces in World Wars I and II.
