Zephyr contest winners earn sweet treats
The Peepmobile, along with some Just Born team members, stopped by the Zephyr Elementary building Wednesday, March 25 to present prizes to students.
The Zephyr Peeps contest had students create a Peeps diorama ranging from topics of pop culture to historic moments.
Fifth-grade teacher Elizabeth Messerli-Crawford organized the contest, which had 61 entries on display. The contest "was modeled after the annual Peeps Diorama Contest put on by the Washington Post," Messerli-Crawford said.
"Having seen entries to the paper's contest in the past and knowing the enthusiasm Zephyr students have for taking on a challenge, I knew students would enjoy the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and artistic talents in a nontraditional way in school," Messerli-Crawford said.
The contest had guidelines, such as that the project had to be the size of a standard school desk.
All of the entries were displayed March 23. Students and staff voted for the diorama they thought was best, and the top three vote-getting groups met with the Just Born representatives.
Last Wednesday morning, Ross J. Born, co-chief executive officer, and Matthew J. Pye, vice president, trade relations and corporate affairs, arrived in the Peepmobile. Crawford showed them all of the entries, and the students met with the representatives and received prizes featuring candy.
The students who won include first place, Celeste Yunez-Cosme and Sarah Wakim, with their Peepel Tower; second place, Payton Skinner and Deanna Weiss, with their Peeptanic; and third place, Allison Gerancher, with Peepmoms (a "Dance Moms"-themed project).
"Overall, I feel the goal of the contest was accomplished. Students had fun, took pride in their creations and supported their classmates' work," Messerli-Crawford said. "What better way to welcome in the spring season than with such a positive experience for our children?"
