Board updated on student assistance programs
The Whitehall-Coplay School Board learned a bit more about the Student Assistance Program (SAP) at its March 23 committee meetings.
The program provides students with assistance by working with the school, community and parents.
The faculty involved with the programs discussed some of the information that was gathered.
Jennifer Senevitis, a middle school counselor, spoke about the program.
The team at the building consists of nine teachers, three counselors, a psychologist, nurse and three members of administration.
According to Senevitis, the building had 43 referrals and 38 active cases. Some of the behavioral concerns that the district analyzes includes depression, academic problems and excessive absences, she said.
Meredith Kester, a high school counselor, also discussed the programs at Whitehall High School.
One program available is the Choices program, which Kester said is in its third year.
The program has students meet in small groups two times a week for an hour, with the parents meeting two times a month.
Kester said parent attendance has been increasing.
In other business, Barbara Chomik, director of curriculum and instruction, showed the board a new textbook, "Go Math!"
"This textbook has much better alignment with core standards in Pennsylvania," Chomik said. "We like that it addresses the principles of math and a shift in thinking of math as procedure instead of solving a problem."
Chomik also said the textbook will allow students to think math, talk math, along with learn it conceptually and think about it mathematically.
Also during the meeting, Superintendent John Corby asked that the board move the approval for the revision of the 2014-15 district calendar to the next meeting agenda.
School will be in session April 2 and May 4. The last day is June 18, due to winter cancellations.
