Members of Albany Township Historical Society, 404 Old Philly Pike, Village of Trexler, outside Kempton, will meet 7:30 p.m. April 20.
Guest speaker will be Mark Grim, who will do a presentation in first person titled "John Frederick Hartranft: Citizen Soldier and Pennsylvania Statesman."
Gen. Hartranft was a prominent Pennsylvanian, but virtually unknown outside Montgomery County.
He rose from colonel of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry regiments to brevet major general, and received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the First Battle of Bull Run. Following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, President Johnson appointed Gen. Hartranft military governor of the prison where eight John Wilkes Booth co-conspirators were held.
Hartranft became special provost marshal general for their trial. From 1873-79, Hartranft served as governor of Pennsylvania; and from 1879 until his death in 1889, he served as major general commanding the Pennsylvania National Guard.
Grim will also provide a brief tutorial on Civil War Union Army officer uniforms and answer questions at the end of his presentation.
This meeting is free and open to the general public. For directions, visit albanyths.org.
