Konkrete Kids costume on last legs?
There's no masking it.
Northampton Area High School needs a new mascot costume.
Not a new mascot, mind you.
The Konkrete Kids moniker will remain.
But the actual costume: Now that's another story.
"We do not have students interested in the mascot because it smells and you can't see," Delaney Haggerty, NAHS Student Council representative, told Northampton Area School District directors at the March 23 meeting.
"You can't see where you're walking. You need to have someone guiding you," Haggerty added.
"We are not interested in replacing the Konkrete Kid," emphasized Haggerty, who distributed to school directors copies of student renderings of two possible options for a new mascot costume.
One drawing depicted a gray square-headed character carrying a sledgehammer.
The second drawing depicted what Haggerty described as a coyote.
Each drawing was labeled with the name "Crush."
In elaborating on the choice of the coyote, which in the drawing resembles a wolf, Haggerty noted that NASD elementary schools have various mascots under the Konkrete Kids banner.
Lehigh Elementary School's mascot is an eagle. George Wolf Elementary School's mascot is the wolf. Moore Elementary School's mascot is the mountain lion. Siegfried Elementary School's mascot is stars.
"And they all do represent the Konkrete Kids," Haggerty reasoned.
The NAHS mascot costume is a larger-than-life football player. Haggerty said students would prefer a mascot that represents not only football, but all NAHS boys' and girls' sports.
Both of the drawings depict a mascot wearing an orange sports uniform jersey top.
"There are also clubs interested in using the jersey," Haggerty said.
"Whatever we decide on the costume, we don't just want football on it," said Haggerty.
"The mascot is a football player, going back about 10 years," NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph Kovalchik said.
"We're not automatically going to the coyote," said Kovalchik.
"Contrary to Joe (Kovalchik), I kinda like this guy (the coyote mascot drawing). He's happy," said school Director Jean Rundle.
"This one is kind of cold," Rundle said, referring to the mascot drawing depicting a blockhead mascot carrying a sledgehammer.
Notes on the drawings stated the sledgehammer would be made of foam.
Kovalchik said he was glad that the drawing indicated that foam would be the composition of the sledgehammer.
Noting the fragile condition of the costume, Kovalchik said, "There actually is a mother who washes the costume. We probably can't do that anymore."
Emphasizing that the Konkrete Kids nickname is not under consideration to be changed, Kovalchik said, "The Konkrete Kids' name will remain as it's spelled."
Haggerty said NAHS Student Council was asked to come up with some drawings of a possible new mascot costume. Council wants the input of fellow students, teachers, the administration and community in choosing a new mascot costume.
There's no timetable for the design and making of a new costume, said Haggerty, NAHS Class of 2015.
"I want to make sure the community gets involved," said Haggerty, "because they're part of supporting the teams."
"It will be a decision by the administration and students," said school board President David Gogel, adding, "It's one of the most important decisions."
Concerning the design of a new mascot costume, Kovalchik quipped, "Nothing is etched in stone, or cement."
