NWL quartet will perform at the IronPigs July 26 game

Daneen Haas and two other students began singing the "Star Spangled Banner" at the Northwestern Lehigh volleyball games two years ago.

Since then, Julia Haas joined the singers and, this year freshman Morgan Moss was added.

Julia and Emily Witt are sophomores.

The girls, who all have taken outside music lessons, met while singing with the a cappella chorus which performs Christmas and spring concerts each year.

Announcer Eric Haas, who handles the games for the school, asked Activities Director Jason Zimmerman if the girls could be announced before the game.

Zimmerman said yes and Eric Haas credits him for helping their singing to become a regular feature at games.

The quartet also performs at basketball games and they expect to sing at football games in the coming season.

"It's wonderful," said Moss. "It's like we are sisters."

Daneen Haas, a senior. said the group has become really close.

She, however, will be leaving the group to go to a university to study chemical engineering.

They wanted to try out to perform at the Phantom ice hockey games but found those performers are not chosen through auditions.

The singers for the IronPigs were. Eric Haas said the auditions were at the Lehigh Valley Mall, Whitehall. The girls practiced the "Star Spangled Banner" all the way to the mall.

Some 120 singers or groups tried out and the Northwestern quartet was among the top three.

Eric Haas said even representatives from other school districts said how good they were.

"It was so much better than the high school games because people were doing double takes," Eric Haas said. "That's when you know its good.

"There were an overwhelming number of compliments."

"When you sing you don't hear it like other people do," Julia Haas said, adding with Daneen leaving, they will try to find a new member.

The quartet will be singing at the Goodwill Fire Company's 100th anniversary July 11, which will begin with a parade at 2 p.m. followed by a variety of events at the firehouse until fireworks end the celebratory day at 10 p.m.

The girls have participated in all of the spring musicals at the school including this year's "Damn Yankees."

Moss plays with the Hope Community Church band in addition to her singing. Emily Witt said when she goes for lessons they travel through the Lehigh Valley to sing at a variety of functions.
