The Borough of Northampton has already spent more for road salt than budgeted in 2015 to keep streets and alleys safe and ice-free.
Borough Council learned $40,000 has been spent for road salt compared to $35,000 allocated.
"We are having another tough winter. The public works department has been out countless hours salting, plowing and picking up snow. As of Feb. 12, we used 600 tons of salt," borough Manager Gene Zarayko reported.
Another 200 tons of road salt are back ordered, but deliveries have been extremely slow, according to Zarayko.
Council indicated the anti-skid material pile also is getting low. The administration retained Makovsky Brothers Trucking to haul in anti-skid materials.
Public Works Director Greg Morey said another problem confronting crews is the potholes cropping up. Potholes will become more evident as the weather warms. Morey said potholes are filled with cold patch when noticed by crews or when complaints are made.
Councilman Keith Piescienski spoke of the poor condition of Main Street, north of 21st Street, which is under PennDOT's highway system.
Council members voiced their disgust with the temporary patch work of streets that a private contractor retained by UGI has done on streets where new gas lines were laid. Borough officials said they cannot recount when the streets were in such a deplorable condition. Work in putting in permanent macadam is expected to be done as spring arrives.
