Helping the children
The pairing of bikers and members of the Northampton Exchange Club may seem out of the ordinary to some. But the club and the Bikers Against Child Abuse of Lehigh Valley Inc. share a common goal of fighting child abuse in the region.
Dressed in denim jackets with a biker insignia, the organization's representatives blended well with the borough-based Exchange Club at the Feb. 18 dinner meeting at the Northampton Memorial Community Center where the issue of child abuse was front and center.
The Exchange Club conducts a successful coin toss to raise funds for the prevention of child abuse each April and has speakers address the membership.
The members of Bikers Against Child Abuse of the Lehigh Valley Inc. are more hands on, joining families of victims at court appearances, paying for transportation so the families can get to court, and providing a myriad of services.
"The only person on the victim's side is us," said Danielle Caiazzo, the organization's secretary.
Detailing the various forms of child abuse, such as physical, mental and neglect, Caiazzo said the organization has found in some cases that basic needs must be met.
"Four children die every day under the age of 4," Caiazzo in a reference to child abuse.
Statistics for 2013 show 705 instances of child abuse were reported in Northampton County and 106 were substantiated, according to Caiazzo. In Lehigh County, 845 instances were reported and 50 substantiated.
