Hit-and-run hearing rescheduled

A preliminary hearing for Amanda Miller, 21, of Bath, is expected to be held no later than the week of Feb. 22.

Miller's initial hearing, scheduled for the week of Jan. 25, was canceled by request of the borough police department, the Northampton based District Judge's Office said.

Miller was charged with hit-and-run driving, failing to report the incident to police and failing to render aid.

Police Chief Ron Morey confirmed that no new date for her hearing has been set.

Morey said Miller could be represented by the Northampton County Public Defender's Office.

The district judge's office said police requested postponement of the hearing so it could be represented by a county assistant district attorney.

Crystal Layet was walking to Colonel John Siegfried Elementary School when she was struck by Miller, operating a 1993 Oldsmobile.

Reports indicate Crystal was hit at Main Street, near Bridge Street, at 8:30 a.m.

Miller stated she did not see the girl when she walked out from behind a parked SUV. Crystal was taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital/Cedar Crest and treated for injuries received in the incident. She is now back home.

Miller turned herself into authorities after WFMZ-TV showed an image of her vehicle on a newscast.

Morey said surveillance video from an apartment in the block provided the picture of the vehicle.

Miller was sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail set by District Judge Daniel Corpora.

Miller's mother, Tammy Weist, Bath, posted bail Jan. 20.

The defendant said she did slow down after striking the girl, but drove off thinking the girl was OK.
