Civil service requirements to stay intact

Northampton Borough Council has decided to keep intact its civil service ordinance rather than amend it.

The changes proposed by the Civil Service Commission regarding eligibility lists involve physical agility tests.

The potential changes raised more questions than answers when borough lawmakers were presented with the proposal at last month's meeting.

"We're going somewhere in the blind here," council Vice President Robert McHale, police committee chairman, said when examining the proposed changes.

Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr., a member of the Civil Service Commission, commented on the changes.

"This is what we received from the attorney in Washington," he said.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said borough Police Chief Ron Morey advised the borough it refrain from making changes.

"As a result of the last council meeting pertaining to updating the civil service ordinance, Chief [Ron] Morey has now requested that we do not make any changes, and he is also requesting that we approve notifying the Civil Service Commission to begin taking applications to prepare a new eligibility list," Zarayko said.

Richard Ackerman, a former borough councilman, is chairman of the civil service board.

Lopsonzski said he would like to see persons such as FBI agents granted consideration.

Council did not act on Lopsonzski's suggestion and agreed with Zarayko to not make changes to the existing Civil Service Commission ordinance.
