Deb Andreoli, Parkland drivers' education teacher, was recognized by the school board for her leadership of the Celebrate My Drive campaign.
Her efforts earned the school district a $25,000 grant from State Farm Insurance.
High school Principal Jim Moniz, during the Jan. 20 school board meeting, explained the project aimed to raise awareness of safe driving practices and to encourage students to pledge their support to safe driving.
Moniz said Andreoli's efforts placed Parkland in the top 100 schools in the nation to pledge for safe driving.
"Your enthusiasm is obvious, and it's there for everyone to see," Moniz said, discussing Andreoli's activities for the campaign.
Andreoli responded to the compliment.
"It's all about safety for our students," Andreoli said. "I was just doing my job," responded Andreoli.
She commended the young people and staff for their participation in the project.
The grant money will be used to obtain a visit from the Pennsylvania DUI Safety Bug Volkswagen which has been customized to demonstrate impaired driving; a motivational assembly with former basketball player player Chris Herren, who was forced to leave the NBA due to his drug use; purchase of iPads and computer cart; paint for motivational quotes in the school hallway; and promotion of safe driving initiatives.
