LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Park construction continues despite winter weather

Winter has not slowed down construction at the Borough of Northampton's newest park, the uptown minipark on Main Street.

The newest addition to the borough's park system, expected to open in 2015, will afford residents a place to relax.

A public works department crew is in the process of installing a three-foot retaining wall at the rear of the property. Borough Manager Gene Zarayko informed council at the Dec. 18 meeting once the wall has been constructed borough personnel will install a concrete pad for the placement of the gazebo.

The park, just south of the Roxy Theater, years ago housed Kroope's Cotton Shop. The borough obtained the vacant tract through a gaming grant.

In other business, PPL connected power to the new Smith Street pump station. During the installation, it was discovered the panel box at the municipal park needed to be repaired. PPL said its crews could not reinstall the meter until repairs are made and an inspection from an independent agency is completed.

Another public works department crew is currently trimming and removing trees at Coventry Court.

Council in 2015 will continue to hold its public meetings on the first and third Thursdays of the month, beginning 7 p.m.
