Officials to see no increases

Northampton Borough Council members within the last 15 years have not received a pay raise, nor does it appear one is in the works for those taking office January 2016.

The Pennsylvania Borough Code does not permit pay hikes for those currently serving in office. The code does permit raises for council members before being sworn in, however. Such a provision requires that candidates pursuing office be informed of the compensation.

Council President John Yurish said there are no plans going forward regarding compensation increases for council. The issue would require a vote by council before the May primary election, so those seeking office would know what the annual salary is.

"No one has mentioned the salaries or come forward," Yurish said.

Four council seats, one from each ward, will appear on the ballot in the next election. The other four council members' terms do not expire until the end of 2017.

Council members receive a $2,250 annual salary, which is paid quarterly. The council president receives $2,500 and mayor $2,600 yearly.

LeRoy Brobst, assistant to the manager, said records show going back to 2000 and earlier council did not vote on salary hikes.
