Gas prices in borough soon to drop

While many consumers in the region are paying an average of about $2.31 a gallon for gas at the pumps, the Borough of Northampton is paying $2.53 a gallon.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said Jan. 23 that soon will change. The next delivery of gas will dramatically drop in cost to between $2 and $2.05 per gallon.

Zarayko said there are two reasons the borough pays $2.53 a gallon. When the borough filled its two 10,000-gallon underground tanks approximately three months ago prices were not dropping as dramatically as they are now.

Also, he said the borough uses a medium grade gasoline because police vehicles require a higher grade.

Zarayko said even at $2.53 a gallon, the price provides a 30 to 35 percent savings when compared to last year.

Municipalities do not pay the state tax for the fuel.

Taking into account the borough spends more than $150,000 annually on gas, the savings in 2015 could be significant.

The Boroughs of Coplay and North Catasauqua, Northampton Borough Municipal Water Authority and Northampton Regional Emergency Medical Services Inc., all which fuel up their vehicles at the Northampton pump will also benefit from the lower cost of gas.
