Northampton Borough Council has granted cost of living increases to 10 public works employees and six retired borough police officers.
The cost of living increases were approved at the Nov. 20 council meeting. The increases were the result of studies conducted on need.
Council specifically granted a 3 percent cost of living adjustment for 10 public works employees following an actuarial study performed by Beyer-Barber.
"It would cost a one-time payment in the amount of $18,539, payable in January 2016," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said.
Cost of living increases of 1.5 percent were approved for five retired police officers. The sixth retiree will receive $8.21 per month since he reached the maximum allowed by state law.
Council, acting on the recommendation of Police Chief Ron Morey, also hired Nathan Smith as a part time police officer. The new position is due to the resignation of Gary Walsh, who became a full time officer in Allentown.
Morey requested the Civil Service Commission prepare an eligibility list of potential police candidates. A request was also made to begin the testing process for a second police sergeant.
During the meeting, Zarayko also reported the borough received its final 2013 surplus distribution from its health insurance cooperative totaling $8,388.
A $5,989 quarterly check was also received from Service Electric Cable TV, representing the 5 percent cable franchise fee.
The Atlas Cement Museum received a $250 quarterly check from Keystone Cement Company, East Allen Township.
