Weisenberg celebrates Tiger Pride Week
Staff and students at Weisenberg Elementary recently celebrated Tiger Pride Week at the school.
This event is part of the positive behavior program for which staff members award students with tickets for following directions, being polite and using respectful language, being responsible and other positive traits.
Throughout the week, everyone was invited to participate in the daily theme by wearing black and gold, crazy socks, sports jerseys, tie dye and white.
The week-long activities culminated with an assembly with cheerleading squads shouting, "Let's get fired up," before turning the program over to visitors from the high school.
High school seniors Sarah Segan, Jordan Schnur, Sabrina Mertz, Alessandro Consuelos and Catie Ziemniak, captain of the cheerleading squad, spoke with the younger students about their own days at Weisenberg.
Segan suggested the students ask questions if they do not understand an assignment.
Schnur discussed his accomplishments during his years at the school, including participating in the Weisenberg Walker program, taking gym with Larry Talotta, art with Karly Sacco, and library with Gig Gilligan.
Schnur also told the students he is taking college courses at Penn State and none of this would have been possible if he did not follow the rules set by each school.
Mertz asked the students how many played sports.
This is an activity she said would help keep them from becoming bored and getting into trouble.
She then shared a story about a time when she and Segan broke one of the school rules by passing notes in Tamara Fitzgerald's classroom.
They were caught and reprimanded.
"We learned from our mistakes and never did that again," she stated.
The final speaker was Consuelos, who told them to respect their teachers and classmates.
Do you always raise your hand when you ask a question? he asked.
After the students finished, Principal Jill Berlet spoke to the students.
"Your high school friends told how they made mistakes, but learned from it," she said. "This program is designed to help you meet those expectations and to grow into responsible young adults."
