LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Blood chilling cold doesn't stop donors

Brothers Shawn and Justin Zimmerman braved the frigid weather last week to donate blood.

"It's nice to give blood," said Justin, who was urged by his brother to do it."There are a lot of people who need my blood more than I do."

"I heard there would be a few snacks," quipped Shawn, who admitted he learned about the blood drive through an email sent by Bob Biese, adviser of Northwestern High School's Key Club, sponsor of the drive.

As in the past, the Key Club worked in conjunction with Miller-Keystone Blood Center, which sent two buses where students and community members donated blood on Jan. 8.

"In January, we only do a half-day [donor event] and we do it on the buses so it doesn't impede school activities," Biese said.

Blood drive coordinators Claire Bachman and Erica Bond manned the snack table in the auditorium lobby where donors could grab something to eat and drink.

"We asked the members of Key Club to donate food and we got the foods you want to have at a blood drive, like chips and snacks," Bachman said. "We got a lot of bottled water, which is very important."

Biese was impressed with the number of donors who showed up.

Key Club is scheduling its next blood drive for March 12.
