Ramps approved for 10th Street

The Borough of Northampton is moving forward with the installation of handicapped ramps on 10th Street.

News of the Northampton County grant was announced at the Dec. 18 meeting of borough council.

"We have received notice from Northampton County that the borough has been approved in the amount of $169,000 for the construction of handicapped ramps on 10th Street," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said. "Lehigh Engineering will begin preparing the bid specifications so that we can open bids in February or March 2015."

In other business, a recent region wide auction of municipal equipment at Tri-Boro Sportsmen Club netted the borough $3,343.

Councilman Robert Coleman said proceeds will be used for borough surplus equipment.

Liberty Auction Services conducted the auction. In the past, the auction was held on borough grounds.

Also, the borough received $2,429 from Comverge Inc. The funds come from the borough allowing the use of its generator at the municipal wastewater treatment plant.

The Northampton Memorial Community Center will again hold a gala New Year's Eve dinner and dance at the Laubach Avenue facility. The event is sponsored by the borough recreation center.

A Main Street property vacated by a check cashing business will soon be occupied by a tattoo parlor. The business, Instattoosionalized LLC, will be located in the 1900 block of Main Street. The borough zoning office is handling the paperwork.

Councilman Keith Piescienski, public works and sewer chairman, mentioned the borough received two checks from Allen Township, one for two new connections tallying $6,200 and the other, $5,765 for a commercial sewer account.
