Northampton police station gets cameras

Security has been enhanced at the Borough of Northampton Police Department station.

Council was informed at the Dec. 18 meeting the black and white camera system at the Smith Lane station has been upgraded with the same kind of color cameras that are used at the community recreation center. The upgraded camera system was installed because of attempted break-ins at the police station and borough hall.

Councilman Robert McHale, code and police committee chairman, said a public works crew will install the cameras..

In a separate security matter, Police Chief Ron Morey will contact the glass company that installed high-grade glass at the police station. The borough is considering installing bulletproof glass at various locations in the municipal building complex.

Also during the meeting, council approved cost of living increases to 10 retired nonuniform employees.

"This resolution is a confirmation of what was approved at the last council meeting," borough Manager Gene Zarayko said.

Approval was also granted to the Dakota Galusha Memorial Fund Committee to use the borough recreation center gymnasium for the seventh annual Dakota Galusha Memorial Fund Basketball Tournament March, 6-8. Last year, the committee paid a $1,125 rental fee. Council approved the same rental fee for the 2015 weekend tournament,

Acting on a request from Morey, council approved a handicapped parking zone at 2415 Dewey Ave.

"This would only be the second spot in the area. I recommend approval," Zarayko said.

Council noted one of the Little Free Libraries previously approved was installed along the Canal Park walking trail.
