High school gym, court to be dedicated
The Northampton Area High School gymnasium and basketball court has been named after two legendary Lehigh Valley sports figures.
The high school gymnasium is now The Pete Schneider Gymnasium.
The high school basketball court is now The Bob Nemeth Court.
The Northampton Area School Board voted unanimously at the Dec. 15 meeting to approve proclamations for the renaming.
"They did a lot for the district as teachers and coaches. This is well-deserved," said board member Roy Maranki.
Plaques commemorating Schneider's and Nemeth's accomplishments are to be placed in the high school.
The designation for the high school gymnasium is being transferred from the Northampton Area Middle School gymnasium, which had been dedicated as The Pete Schneider Gymnasium.
The middle school gymnasium will be demolished, along with the middle school. This is expected to occur during the summer of 2016 after the new Northampton Area Middle School opens in fall 2015.
Before the high school renovation and expansion project was completed in 2009, which included a new library, cafeteria and gymnasium, among other improvements, the high school basketball team had played its home games in the middle school gym.
The high school gym is to be dedicated in Schneider's honor at the 7 p.m. Dec. 19 varsity basketball game between the NAHS Konkrete Kids and the Parkland High School Trojans. The dedication ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m.
The Konkrete Kids varsity hoopsters tip off against the Catasauqua Area High School Rough Riders 7 p.m. Dec. 20 in the newly-minted Pete Schneider Gymnasium at NAHS.
Schneider, a Northampton native, spent more than 50 years as a student, teacher, guidance counselor and coach in NASD. Schneider was a student during the late 1930s, playing football, basketball and baseball.
He was a captain of the Konkrete Kids 1937 District XI basketball championship team and a member of the 1937 Konkrete Kids football "Wonder Team."
He played on or coached five NAHS District XI championship teams.
Schneider was an Army Air Force veteran, serving during World War II and attaining the rank of sergeant.
He received a bachelor's in social studies from Muhlenberg College in 1942 and a master's in administration from Lehigh University in 1951.
Schneider, a social studies teacher and guidance counselor, was NAHS boys basketball head coach 1949-58. He also coached NASD football, golf and girls basketball.
Schneider, a member of the Muhlenberg College Sports Hall of Fame, Lehigh Valley Football and Basketball Halls of Fame and the Northampton Area School District Hall of Fame, retired in 1982 from NASD. Schneider died in 1996. He was 77.
Nemeth, a health and physical education teacher, was NAHS boys basketball coach 1965-76.
Nemeth holds the most wins as a boys basketball coach in NASD history, with a career record of 196 wins and 69 losses. His teams were 56 and 7 in the middle school gym. As a coach, he garnered five league and one District XI championship.
Nemeth played, coached and assisted in 19 league championships including three District XI championships and two state titles.
Nemeth, a member of the Lehigh Valley Basketball Hall of Fame, the Whitehall-Coplay School District Hall of Fame and the Northampton Area School District Hall of Game, retired in 1998 after 33 years with NASD.
The basketball court is to be dedicated in Nemeth's honor when the Whitehall Zephyrs varsity basketball team faces off against the Konkrete Kids, 7 p.m. Jan. 3, in the Northampton gymnasium. The dedication ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m.
