A family of squirrels that took up residence in the Northampton Canal Park men's restroom have relocated.
At the Nov. 20 council meeting, Councilman Ed Pany said the squirrels were discovered during the installation of a camera system by borough personnel. The squirrels were found living in the ceiling of the men's rest room.
The camera system was installed to curb vandalism.
In other business, borough manager Gene Zarayko reported on a cheerleading event hosted by the Northampton Athletic Association and the borough recreation center. The event netted a profit $10,191,representing $1,070 more than in 2013.
The uptown park on Main Street is beginning to take shape. Construction has started on the base for the gazebo.
Pany mentioned the next dance for fourth through sixth grade students at the Lerchenmiller Drive recreation center will take place Saturday, Dec. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Council Vice President Robert McHale noted the borough zoning hearing board unanimously approved an appeal for a home occupancy business at 2259 Washington Ave.
A contract was signed by Zarayko for the replacement of 18 cell phones, 14 of which are assigned to the police department.
Verizon Wireless was awarded the contract, replacing Nextel.
Zarayko said the fees will remain the same.
"However, the service is supposed to be better and there is unlimited message and text time," he said.
