Weisenberg Elementary students learn fire safety

Firefighters with the Weisenberg Fire Company recently visited Weisenberg Elementary School to talk with the students about fire safety.

Firefighter Randy Zack spoke to his audience about staying fire safe in their homes.

He explained various ways to make a home safe, citing the use of a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector.

Zack asked students how they could be safe if there were a space heater in their home.

He told them they need to sit three feet away from a running space heater.

He also discussed the heat an open flame candle throws off and how quickly it can burn a person or catch something on fire.

"Blow out before you go out," Zack said, was a good phrase to remember.

He also told students families always need to have an escape plan from their homes.

Zack suggested students draw their home and create an escape plan they can practice with an adult.

"When you draw your escape plan make sure you have two different ways to leave your house," he told the students. "And most importantly, get out and stay out.

"Do not go back in no matter what. Wait for the fire company and tell them if there is someone in the house who needs to be rescued.

"If you are trapped inside of the house, go to a window and wait for help. Most importantly do not hide."

At the close of the assembly, firefighters Stacy Carl and Matt Krapf entered wearing their firefighting gear.

They told students there is no reason to be afraid of someone dressed as a firefighter. The person may even be someone they know.

After the assembly ended, students went outside to learn about the different types of fire equipment Station 51 has.

They also saw the ladder truck with its ladder extended over the school, as well as the engine and tanker.
