Council to sell dump truck with plow

The Borough of Coplay has a dump truck to sell.

During a discussion at Tuesday's workshop meeting, council members agreed they should require a $5,000 minimum bid.

The truck is a 1996 Dodge with a plow. The clutch needs to be replaced and it will not go into four-wheel drive. It also needs tires, said public works Director Paul Boyle.

Opening the discussion, borough Secretary-Treasurer Sandra Gyecsek said the Kelly Blue Book does not list values for dump trucks. She found some similar vehicles online for prices ranging from $8,000 to $10,000.

"I wouldn't go less than $5,000," said Councilman David Royer.

He and Boyle agreed it would cost about $2,000 to fix the clutch and four-wheel drive and another $1,100 for tires.

"If we can't get at least $5,000 for it, we'll fix it and we'll sell it," said Councilman Charles Sodl. "Here we have an asset and just because this is broke or that is broke, I don't think we should give it away."

"We could always use it," said Boyle.

Sodl, Royer and Boyle said the truck would be a good investment for a landscaper.

Council President Lou Bodish estimated the truck cost at least $40,000 when it was new.

Gyecsek also noted Coplay's truck has only 32,000 miles on it compared to the similar ones she found online, which had more than 300,000 miles.

Sodl said dump truck buyers are not like car buyers so the age should not count against it.

"You don't buy it for the year and the beauty," he said.

Council is expected to vote at its next meeting Dec. 9 to put the truck out for bid.
