Richard C. Gottwald, 78, of Bethlehem, died Oct. 21, 2014, at Blough Health Care Center, Bethlehem. Born in Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Charles and Ann (Kobick) Gottwald. He was the husband of Jane E. (Adams) Gottwald for 56 years.
He was a graduate of Allentown Central Catholic HS. He earned a bachelor of science in education from Moravian College. He was a recipient of a Kennedy Foundation Grant, which he used toward earning a masters degree in special education from Boston University.
He was a secondary special education teacher for 34 years in the Harford County School District, Havre de Grace, Md., until retiring in 1992. He coached track and field, football, swimming and life saving. He was inducted into the Harford County Public Schools Educator Hall of Fame.
He was a member of College Hill Moravian Church.
He was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, POE-Havre de Grace #1564.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Karen G. and her husband, David Malcolm, and Nancy G. Gottwald-Losagio and her husband, Samuel Losagio; and two grandchildren, Eleanor and Katharine Malcolm.
