Proposed increase discussed

Northampton Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said Oct. 31 the 2015 budget more than likely will include a property tax increase.

He says the administration is unable to avoid the increase.

Zarayko said he is not in a position to provide specific numbers on the millage rate as numbers are still being put together. Several factors still must be taken into consideration, such as reaching a resolution on a police contract before the proposed budget is submitted to borough lawmakers.

"The budget will not be presented to council at tonight's meeting," Zarayko said, adding council will receive the budget later in November for adoption in December.

The present millage rate is 8.5 mills.

Council President John Yurish said the final draft of the budget is not yet finished.

"It will be some kind of tax increase, " Zarayko added.
