Parkland School Board welcomes new teachers

The energy and enthusiasm of bright young people radiated throughout the room as board members greeted teachers and administrators who are beginning their careers in the Parkland School District.

Director of Human Resources Pam Kelly offered opening remarks at the Sept. 23 meeting.

"There is much anticipation as we bring forth new teachers and administrators," Kelly said. "It was a true team effort focused on finding top notch hires. They survived a rigorous, competitive interview process."

She reported 800 applications were received and 400 interviews were conducted.

The screening process began in March and continued to the start of the school term. References had to be checked, and potential employees were called in for additional interviews.

Thirty contracted positions, which were open through retirements, resignations, increased enrollment or mandates were filled.

The remaining 30 teachers were selected to fill temporary vacancies created by individuals on personal leave.

Even though their teaching assignments may be temporary, all new hires went through the same intense screening process.

Fifty percent of the new teachers already have Master's degrees. The degrees were earned at 30 different colleges and universities and represent 21 different subject areas.

Many of the new teachers are graduates of Parkland High School.

"I love it when they went to Parkland," board member Lisa Adams said. "We're growing our own.

"The biggest challenge is to keep this energy mojo going," board member Jef Reyburn added.

After time for refreshments and socializing, teachers departed to prepare for the next day's classes while the board continued meeting.
