Twenty-nine band members and five guard members from Northwestern Lehigh High School and several seventh and eighth-grade students from the middle school have been rehearsing their field show in preparation for the 2014 football season.
They spent two hours for 10 days learning various pieces of music. Some will be performed during the field show. Others will be used in the stands to celebrate achievements of the Tiger football team.
Students under the leadership of band Directors James Lykins and Shawn Fies, performed in uniform for family, community members and members of the school board Aug. 18.
As the band was preparing to perform, Lykins addressed the group saying how the students amazed him.
Based on his past experience, students often took a month to learn one song.
This talented group of musicians learned two songs a day during their 10 days at band camp.
At the close of the program, the band marched off the field and stopped in front of the home team stands where they were given the command to assume a parade rest position by drum major Ben Fruchtl.
Fruchtl was one of the band members Lykins introduced to the audience.
As Lykins talked about the student and his accomplishments, the drum major refused to relax his parade rest position to acknowledge the kudos from his instructor.
Lykins laughingly told the young man he should acknowledge the kudos and the crowd for which he performed.
At that point, Fruchtl broke rank, greeted the crowd with a huge grin on his face quickly followed by an equally exuberant wave; after which he immediately resumed his previous position.
