Third graders solve mystery at Camp Tiger Cub

Northwestern Elementary School staff did an outstanding job decorating the high school auditorium for the annual third grade musical, "The Mystery of Camp Tiger Cub."

Third-grade teachers Marissa Bartholomew, Jacob Bennett, Jodi Chandler, Marion Miller and substitute art teacher Sarah Miller worked together to create a camp-like atmosphere in the auditorium.

The musical, written by music teacher Shawn Fies, was designed to assist the third graders in learning facts they will be tested on when taking PSATs.

The play opened with Micah Bachert, as Camp Director William, blowing his whistle to assemble all of the campers for his opening speech.

Following his speech, the campers dispersed and reacquainted themselves with friends they met last year.

One group of students-turned-detective reminisced about a mystery they solved during last year's camp.

Suddenly, someone noticed the camp flag was missing and pandemonium broke loose as everyone began looking for the flag.

A decision is made to solicit the help of last year's detectives, Jenna Breininger as Katie; Ramon Pope as Joey; Quinn Conrey as Annabel and Matt Shubay as Peter; to find the flag.

During their investigation, they learned the camp was in an area inhabited by the Lenape Indian tribe.

The Indians believed people should survive off the land, in families and working together. Iroquois and Algonquin Indians also inhabited the area.

The name, Camp Tiger Cub, was chosen because the founders knew tigers are strong animals and could chase away evil spirits.

Pokey the Bear, played by Marissa Christman, even stopped by to discuss how to prevent forest fires.

Hiker Hannah, portrayed by Angelina Klein and Daniel Boone, played by Jacob Solt stopped by to discuss erosion.

Meanwhile, the three detectives were discovering clues to help them learn who took the camp flag.

They discovered broken branches underneath the flag pole, food trash at the base of the flagpole and a ladder in the storage shed.

Throughout the musical, young camper Joey continually complained something he placed in his backpack was missing.

As the end of camp approached, everyone commiserated on the disappearance of the flag.

Camp Director William called the campers together and thanked them for spending the week at camp.

The detectives remind him they were charged with finding the thief.

They asked all the counselors to line up with their camping bags and the dectectives began looking inside each bag.

The detectives then asked Director William to open his bag and inside were all of the items Joey had packed.

As Joey's backpack looked like the bags used by counselors, the camp director had picked up the wrong bag.
