Parkland's transportation department is so large, administrators are preparing a year in advance for the retirement of the person who has managed it for 18-1/2 years, Jeff Emig.
At the June 24 meeting, District Superintendent Richard Sniscak discussed the preparation.
"We felt it was imperative to have a strong succession plan in place," Sniscak said.
He noted long-term bus dispatcher Barbara Keller recently submitted her retirement, creating a loss of experience in the department.
With 160 buses and other school vehicles transporting 10,000 students on a daily basis, Sniscak stressed the importance of having someone trained to handle the responsibilities when Emig departs June 30, 2015.
In response, the district created a new position, Supervisor of Transportation and Safety.
Anthony Naradko, assistant principal at the high school, was chosen for the job, effective July 1.
"He'll work a whole year with Jeff Emig in transportation," Sniscak said. "Tony's been very active in our safety program. He'll be the point person for safety."
The superintendent said the cost of the new position will be offset by moving Keller's job designation from Act 93 Administrator to a support position.
Although Naradko will receive a $95,843 full-time salary, the cost in new money will be only $38,000, due to the adjustment of the dispatcher's position, Sniscak explained.
Emig, who also served as assistant director of school services, will be retiring after a 33-year career at Parkland.
