Northwestern scores wins in Science Olympiad

A jingle-jangle sound was heard as the Science Olympians entered the school board meeting room at Northwestern Lehigh School District for the June 18 meeting.

Members went as far as nationals and came home with handfuls of medals, creating the jingle as they wore their awards proudly.

"I'm glad to see all the medals," said board President Darryl Schafer.

As the students spoke it became clear that many had their lives and career plans changed after working with the team. They were especially proud for beating a plethora of large schools.

They received traveling money from fundraisers, donations in memory of Co-director Dave Moyer's wife, and received a grant from the Educational Foundation in order to compete. Transportation was provided by the school.

In addition to possibly changing their career choices, several students said they were already doing college-level work. They had become a close-knit group thanks to the experience and said it was a great time.

A team of eight received a Distinguished Medal.

Board member Paul Fisher thanked co-coaches Dave Moyer and Glenn Frey for the work they put into the program.

Board member Ron Morrison said he attended three of the events.

Superintendent Mary Anne Wright said it was fantastic watching the students grow. She thanked Moyer and Frey for their dedication.

Board member Joe Reiter said it was a couple years ago the group became a team instead of a club.

"These are our scientists and leaders." he said.
