Northwestern Elementary School celebrated its Literary Arts Fiesta on April 15.
School specialists, Susan Hanlon, library; Shawn Fies, music; Bonnie Millward, physical education; Tracy Smoyer, art teacher; and Sarah Miller, substitute art teacher; worked together to create an event focused around the theme of this years book fair, Fiesta.
Fies created a musical production featuring the fourth grades classes of Marion Miller, Carol Beidler, Cindy O'Neil, Sean Killen and Jen Budick.
They played various musical instruments featuring songs about Mexico. As usual, Fies incorporated a bit of humor into the script.
Kaitlyn Browning and Ronald Confer discussed the next song they would perform while showing a book about "Mexico" by an unnamed author .
"I wrote a few things this year in class that are unnamed," Browning quipped. "My teacher keeps telling me that I need to put my name on it but I keep saying, 'This is by anonymous.'"
Students who earned black and brown belts for playing the recorders performed "Á la puerta del Cielo."
"The black and brown belts are simply the highest level of belt someone can earn in Recorder Karate," Fies explained. "By achieving that position, they were asked to play one additional song.
"You can even see the belts on the bottom of each of their recorders.'
The literary event also included the spring book fair in the library, students creating piñatas out of lunch bags, a story and food.
