LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Meeting topic muddies the waters

Whitehall residents Tina and William Schultz asked the Whitehall Board of Commissioners for help due to a hole on Riverview Drive, where they reside.

The couple said the damage was caused by mud slides and water gushing down a hill onto their property after rainy weather.

"I'm begging the township for help. I live on a hill," Mrs. Schultz told the commissioners.

The board and Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr., were shown photos of the damage.

"I called the township. I was told there is no money in the budget," Mrs. Schultz said.

Hozza asked, "Who did you talk to?"

Mrs. Schultz said she couldn't recall a name.

"I have trenches in my yard," she continued. "It looks like a moat."

Due to the recent rain, the couple is concerned of further damage to their property and street.

Hozza promised the township will look into the matter and will schedule a meeting to discuss what can be done to solve the problem.

In other matters, Hozza brought up concerns about traffic safety on Grape Street near St. John's United Church of Christ. The church parking lot is located across the street and pedestrians have to cross it to get to the church. Signs advise motorists to stop when someone is in the crosswalk.

Hozza said a police car stationed on the north side of the church helped slow down traffic during the church's "Community Day" celebration. Hozza told the commissioners the church lacks the funds to purchase land next to the Olive Garden Restaurant for parking.Commissioner Gerard Palagonia acknowledged the safety issue with church members. Palagonia, a retired township police officer, suggested upgrading signs and devices to slow traffic.

A member of the Environmental Advisory Committee, Mario Spagnoletti, addressed the commissioners on the success of the township's recent recycling event. Spagnoletti said the EAC project was aided by Commissioner Phillips Armstrong, Hozza and the Stiles based Boy Scout troop, thanking them and the Whitehall-Coplay Press for their cooperation.
