The Backyard Homesteading Series, sponsored by Penn State Extension, is offering three-hour programs with an extra Canning 101 workshop at the beginning of August.

Classes include: Grow Longer: Extending the Growing Season,from 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 12 at Red Cat Farm, Germansville. Grow Longer will give an overview of different structures permitting produce to grow longer.

Tour of Red Cat Farm to see all these structures in use on a working farm.

Canning 101 will be offered over two sessions: June 26 and Aug. 7 at the Miller Family Building at Cedar Crest College, Allentown. In the first workshop, learn how to preserve high-acid foods with water bath canning.

The second workshop will cover pressure canning and preserving. Learn how to safely can low-acid foods, such as vegetables or meats, in a pressure canner.
