LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Coplay Column

After eleven years, the era of fireworks during the Independence Day/Fourth of July holiday in Coplay has come to an end.

Contrary to many town residents, the fireworks were not sponsored by the borough.

Gene and Sandy Gyecsek took on the project on their own. For two or three years before that, a borough resident put on his own show for residents.

Contracted with LTNT Pyrotechnics, Laurys Station, the borough couple offered a spectacular fireworks display year after year.

The display cost $10,000 with funds that were raised. The final year the Gyecseks' held it, the cost was $11,500. Each year the couple added more and last year the finale was stupendous.

The past couple of years LTNT did the show on their own, despite fundraising falling short. While there were large crowds, donations fell short. Although borough organizations and the borough chipped in with donations, the public response wasn't up to par to fill the gap with the costs of putting on the show.

Sadly, there will be a void in the borough this Fourth of July holiday; a program that drew families from the entire region, not just Coplay.

Street sweeping is now complete for 2014.

The job, done by a private company last week, was unable to complete the task because of the weather. Returning last Friday, street sweeping took place on even numbered streets and a few others, beating the storm that crossed the region in the late afternoon.

For some owners of vehicles who did not adhere to the posted no parking signs, they were ticketed.

The more than 70 banners that will be hung on utility poles across town have arrived at the borough hall. The banners should be hung on the poles this week.

On Second and Chestnut streets, they will share the poles with the American flags, which will be flown through the Fourth of July holiday. The flags face the street and the banners face inward, toward the pavements.

The banners show community pride.

A reminder, on holidays which fall on the weekend, garbage collection is pushed back a day.

This week refuse collection was on Tuesday and Thursday. Collection for some residents occurred as normal.

Recycling and yard waste and grass pickup by borough crews was unchanged.
