Coplay Column

The Coplay American Legion Post 426 will hold its annual Memorial Day program this coming Sunday.

Joined by the Legion Auxiliary, the uniformed men and women will hold a ceremony, including a rifle salute and placement of wreaths at various monuments throughout town.

On the itinerary will be programs at the Coplay Sangerbund Veterans Memorial, Fifth and Hokendauqua streets, Coplay War Veterans Memorial Plaza, Chestnut and Maple streets, Laurys Station, Stiles, cemeteries and a wreath tossing into the Lehigh River commemorating those who died at sea. The program will conclude at the Second Street Post 426 home.

With Memorial Day comes an abundance of American flags flown on poles and hung outside residences across the borough.

Bright new American flags have been placed at the final resting places for veterans at Coplay Cemetery on Ruch Street and St. Peter's Cemetery on Hokenauqua Street. The borough will have American flags flown on utility poles along Chestnut and Second streets.

Youngsters are reminded the annual bicycle derby will be held at the parkway this Saturday.

Sponsored by Coplay Athletic Club, the event will run from 9-11:30 a.m. Sunday is the rain date.

Children participating in the event are to pick up their number at 8:30 a.m. A free bicycle helmet will be given to children registered.

The event is open to borough children, up to 15-years-old. There will be events such as the serpentine to test the children's bike riding skills.

Involved in the event are the Coplay Town Watch and the borough police department. Smaller children on big wheels are also invited.

The Coplay Democratic Club has filled a vacancy on its slate of officers and executive board.

Frank W. Reichl has been tapped as secretary, according to President William Leiner Jr.

The club was formed in 1930 and incorporated in 1931. Years ago it was known as Woodrow Wilson Democratic Club.

Presently, Leiner is president, Beverly Miller, vice president, Jocelyn Wedge serves as treasurer and Reichl as secretary. The club meets quarterly.

Coplay police reported the department responded to 153 incidents in April involving three arrests, 21 traffic arrests, six written warnings and 16 parking tickets issued.

The police department will have two officers at the bike derby.

All three police vehicles are in service.
