Whitehall Township's request for a 2014 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) that would fund road projects was recently rejected by Lehigh County.
The township, however, is working on a 2015 CDBG application that it believes meets the criteria for having such projects approved.
Over the years, the township has obtained grants for handicapped curb construction and road work. CDBG projects are funded by federal grants, which are passed through the state and administered by the county.
The township's application for 2015 is for $246,000. Specifically, the township's application requests $28,600 for Pennsylvania Street, between Fifth and Sixth streets in Fullerton.
Another $98,000 is sought for repaving Iron Street and $108,000 has been applied for Third Street, both in Hokendauqua.
Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said neighborhood statistics regarding income levels and other factors are taken into account when the grant application is reviewed.
The township has no timetable for when the county will present its findings, approval or rejection, but the township is optimistic.
The township's Development, Planning and Zoning Bureau, led by Director Lee Rackus, is in charge of the application paperwork.
