Mertztown

Berks County Parks and Recreation Department is inviting children and their families rain or shine to cast their lines in the Children's Fishing Rodeo 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. May 10 at Hunsicker's Grove, 9350 Longswamp Road, Mertztown.

Children ages 4-15 will learn the sport of fishing and thrill of the catch.

Prizes will be awarded for the biggest catch in each age group, along with random prize drawings in each age group with prizes from Cabela's.

Contest divisions are by age in 45-minute periods for younger kids and 1 hour periods for older kids: 4-5 year olds fish 8:30-9:15 a.m.; 6-7 year olds fish 9: 25-10:10 a.m.; 8-10 year olds fish 10:20-11:20 a.m.; and 11-15 year olds fish 11:30-12:30 p.m.

All participants must be registered a half hour before their age group is scheduled to fish.

All children must be at least 4 years old with their own equipment and accompanied by an adult.

Chris's Bait & Tackle will display and sell bait and other merchandise.

Members of the Berks Fly Tyers Club will have fly fishing demos of casting and fly-tying.

Kids can learn some fishing line knot skills under the pavilion, as well as other knots to help with outdoor fun.

Also under the pavilion, kids can learn how to make an origami frog, and race them on a table with a friend.

Search for rubber ducks hidden around the park, using their location coordinates and a handheld GPS.

Crafts for kids and other activities are available for kids under the pavilion when they are not fishing.

Food and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Admission is free. A parking donation will be taken.
