Selig receives president's volunteer award
Brandon Selig, 18, a member of Lehigh County 4-H, from Germansville, has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President's Volunteer Service Award. This award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama.
Lehigh County 4-H nominated Brandon for national honors this fall in recognition of his volunteer service.
Brandon has been very active in numerous organizations, giving his time to improve his community.
Brandon has been a 4-H member for 10 years. He started in a 4-H Seeing Eye Puppy Club; raising puppies for visually impaired individuals.
As he got older, he took on leadership positions in his clubs, serving in numerous offices. In 2013, Brandon volunteered his time to be a 4-H Camp Counselor at Camp Shehaqua.
During this weeklong camp he was a true role model; performing as the best counselor for the year. In addition, he volunteered his services as an EMT during this week assisting the camp nurse, and also served as the Lifeguard.
Last fall, Brandon was honored as the Outstanding Senior Lehigh County 4-H member.
While Brandon has performed numerous community service opportunities in 4-H, he does so much more.
Brandon serves as an EMT with the Northern Valley EMS. Recently, he became a volunteer firefighter and donates his time willingly to save lives and help his community.
In addition, he is an Eagle Scout and assembled "Jared Boxes" which were taken to Penn State Hershey for children with cancer.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, recognizes middle level and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service.
"The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities," said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. "By recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community."
"Demonstrating civic responsibility through volunteerism is an important part of life," said NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti. "These honourees practice a lesson we hope all young people, as well as adults, will emulate."
