Fies honored for his commitment to music education

Northwestern Elementary music teacher Shawn Fies was recently honored by the National Association of Music Merchants for his dedication to music education.

Forty-three districts in Pennsylvania were named "Best Communities for Music Education in the United States," with Northwestern Elementary securing a position as one of 96 schools in the nation to receive this honor.

NAMM considers many variables before choosing the schools, including the number of ensembles, the amount of music education students receive daily, the amount of money invested in the program and the number of students who show a genuine interest in the music program and want to be a part of it.

Fies said 81 percent of the fifth grade class is involved in an ensemble of some type through band and chorus or both.

"I am very proud of the kids and work they do," Fies said, adding, especially as the students arrive at school before classes begin for rehearsals.

Partners in Education is credited by Fies as providing excellent community support for his music department.

PIE allows him to share his talents with students through programs the group sponsors.

Some of the programs include the elementary chorus performing with the Michael Mann group on May 20 and the annual third grade musical.

This year the event, written and directed by Fies, is called "The Mystery of Camp Tiger Cub."

The musical will be presented May 15 at the school.
