Northampton Community College

L.V. Dance Exchange Exchange

Northampton Community College, in cooperation with Lehigh Valley Dance Exchange and Monarch Dance Company, will host the second annual "SpringUP" dance festival March 29 and 30.

There will be guest artists from New York City, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and master classes and performances. Registration is free, which includes performances, is open to professional-level dancers in college and beyond. There are free general public tickets for the SpringUP Dance Festival. Soap Bubbles and Math, a free and open to the public program with Dr. Frank Morgan, will be held at 11 a.m. April 3 at NCC. A William Allen High and an M.I.T. and Princeton University graduate, he is an Atwell Professor of Mathematics at Williams College, Mass. NCC to Present Macbeth

Macbeth, Shakespeare's classic play about betrayal, greed and love, will be staged at Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Main Campus, at 7:30 p.m. April 1o, 11 and 12 and at 3 p.m. April 13. The cast includes local residents Torez Mosley, Justin Ariola, Daniel Trempel, Brian Meehan, Alisha Andino, Marcas Ortiz, all of Bethlehem; and Marian Barshinger and Desi Herman, Hellertown. The director is William Mutimer, assistant professor, communication and theatre

Khan Lecture to feature Thornton

Charles H. Thornton will be a featured presenter at the upcoming Fazlur R. Khan Distinguished Lecture Series at 4:30 p.m. April 11. His topic is "Renaissance, Rebirth and Disruptive Innovation," which will discuss the four companies he formed after stepping down from his role as co-chairman of Thornton Tomasetti, including management and engineering firm Charles H. Thornton & Company, LLC; technology and structural health monitoring company Straam Inc.; TTG, an industrialized, prefabricated construction entity; and AECOS Ltd., a systems integration company.

Lehigh University's Fazlur R. Khan Distinguished Lecture Series, co-sponsored by the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Art, Architecture & Design, honors Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan's legacy of excellence in structural engineering and architecture.

Kate Bertholot, CNRS researcher, National Center for Scientific Research, Marseille, France, will speak on the State of ISrael and Christian ZIonism's use of the bible at 7 p.m. April 2, Lehigh University Sinclair Auditorium, 7 Asa Drive. Moravian College

Moravian College will receive a grant from The Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission (BFAC) in support of its first annual writers' conference, "Life Histories: Discovering self, community and world." The June 6-8, 2014, open to the public event will feature nationally known writers Ursula Hegi and Lauri Halse Anderson as keynote speakers.

39th Annual Dance Concert

The Moravian College Dance Company, under the direction of Mary Anne Gillen Hoffman, will present its 39th annual concert at 7:30 p.m. March 28 and 29 in the Foy Concert Hall, south campus. The program will feature the choreography of the company's artistic directors, students, alumni and guest artists. There is a cost. Call 610-861-1530 for information.

Moravian College announced a new dog-friendly policy that allows dogs on campus under certain conditions. "Since Moravian College is home of the Greyhounds, where students are proud to be called 'Hounds,' it seems even more appropriate that we allow faculty and staff to bring their dogs to campus," said President Bryon Grigsby. He noted that research studies have demonstrated the physical, emotional, and social benefits of canine companionship.

Faculty and staff dogs, which must be spayed/neutered, clean, well behaved, non-aggresive, housebroken, and up to date with vaccinations and flea treatments, must be registered with campus safety. Supervisors are required to notify employees in an office area if a dog will be present. For information, call or visit the college website.

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Penn State Lehigh Valley will host its annual free, open to the public Undergraduate Research Symposium from 10:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 1 in room 135, Center Valley campus. The keynote address and awards presentation will begin at 12:15 p.m.

Ratzenberger to speak at commencement

John Ratzenberger, Emmy-nominated actor, entrepreneur and philanthropist, will be the featured speaker at Penn State Lehigh Valley's 2014 commencement ceremony to be held at 11 a.m.May 10 at Stabler Arena.

He is best known for playing mail carrier "Cliff Clavin" on the sitcom "Cheers." He has had a voice part in all of Pixar's feature films made to date. Ratzenberger produced and hosted "Made in America" for the Travel Channel. He co-authored "We've Got It Made in America: A Common Man's Salute to an Uncommon Country."

Penn State Lehigh Valley 2014 Faculty Lecture Series with Julio Urbina, Ph.D., Penn State associate professor of electrical engineering, a12:15 p.m. March 27 in room 135, Center Valley campus. The lectures are free and open to the public.

Urbina joined Penn State in 2006. He had been on the faculty of the Donaghey College of Information Science and Systems Engineering, University of Arkansas, Little Rock. He was a RF and Digital Engineer at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory, Peru, and was a visiting scientist at the Arecibo Observatory in the Space and Atmospheric Sciences group.
