Feb. 27

Upper Milford Historical Society meeting, 7 p.m. Upper Milford municipal building, Old Zionsville. The topic is quilts in history with Michele McLaughlin who is a quilt maker, collector and researcher. Refreshments will be provided. For additional information, call 610-966-4376.

The Lehigh Valley Chapter 1371 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees will conduct their monthly meeting at St. Peters Lutheran Church community room, 1933 Hanover Ave., Allentown, starting noon with lunch. Following lunch, Greg Bott, Allentown, will tell about the Lehigh Valley Center for Independant Living and answer questions. A brief business meeting will also be held. All current and former Federal workers are invited to attend. First timers and those wishing to have lunch are asked to call Ken Zeiner at 610-419-0739 before Feb. 22. There is a cost for the lunch. St. John's Lutheran Church, Fifth and Chestnut streets, Emmaus, is holding a book, DVD, plant and seed swap, as well as a pot-luck lunch noon in the church Parish Hall. The event is free and open to the public with items for all ages– children and adults. Families are welcome and a craft activity will be available for children. Stop by for lunch– which includes an ice cream bar for dessert– to browse and get some great items. If you would like to make a donation for the swap, bring your donations of books, games, CD/DVDs and children's toys to St. John's by Feb. 28. Lehigh Carbon Community College will host a transfer fair for students, alumni and the public 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Community Services Center at its main campus in Schnecksville. Representatives from various colleges and universities will be on hand to answer questions about transferring from LCCC to a four-year school. Sponsored by the Advising and Transfer Center and LCCC's Phi Theta Kappa chapter, the event is free and open to the public. Esther Bauer will speak about her harrowing experiences as a Holocaust survivor 12:15 p.m. in room 135 at Penn State Lehigh Valley. The event is free and open to the public. In her lecture, Bauer, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1924, recounts the story of how she, her husband, and her father and mother all landed in the Auschwitz during the war. Upon being liberated, Bauer, the sole survivor in her family, decided to "live each day, have fun and be a human being." She speaks to students as often as she can so that they will "learn what happened, and see to it that it never happens again." For more information, contact University Relations at 610-285-5067.
